CPFP Farewell to Staff
After 6 years of dedicated service to the Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program, Ms. Latricia Maldonado leaves her position as Program Analyst. We congratulate Ms. Maldonado and wish her success in her new position as Administrative Officer at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI).
CPFP Trans-Fellowship Research Award (TFRA) Application Opening
The CPFP Trans-Fellowship Research Award (TFRA) is a one-year research award (up to $15,000) to a study team consisting of at least two CPFP fellows. The award will support research costs to carry out a transdisciplinary project focused on cancer prevention. Proposals will be evaluated on their potential for significant scientific impact within the field of cancer prevention, creative and meaningful integration of multiple scientific disciplines, innovation, and ability to achieve the study objectives within the proposed time frame.

The CPFP has begun a new tradition, bi-monthly birthday celebrations! For our first event, we celebrate Jacky Hua, Brennan Streck, Maggie Correa-Mendez who all have January birthdays! We look forward to our next celebration in April!

All Cancer Prevention Fellows in their first year at the NCI attend the CPFP Scientific Presentation workshop, which covers the structure, organization, and delivery of scientific talks crafted for multidisciplinary audiences. The curriculum aims to prepare fellows for their first Fellows Research Meeting (FRM) presentation and will include in-class discussion and exercises, a final rehearsal of their FRM presentation, and expert and peer feedback throughout.

CPFP Career Development Award Grant Writing Course – Mock Review
Wednesday, March 15, 2023, 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM ET
Moderated by our partners at Grant Writing Mentors, course participants will submit revised and "completed" application for review, including the Biosketch, Specific Aims, Candidate Section, Research Strategy, Project Summary sections. Three reviewers will be assigned to each application. FOA-specific critique templates will be provided to assigned reviewers. Following the review, applicants will receive the reviewers' written critiques.

This is a required CPFP event for fellows in their first year on-site. As part of the 2023 CPFP Leadership Training Series, this session aims to help participants (1) Learn a specific 4-step process for setting expectations, (2) Understand how you can modify this process to verify expectations set by another person, (3) Explain what constitutes constructive feedback, and (4) Use a framework to give constructive feedback.
First Year Cohort Potluck Meeting – Open Office Hours

This monthly meeting brings together members of the first year CPFP cohort. Why a “Potluck”? Fellows decide each month what to bring to the table for discussion. This month, CPFP staff will be present for an open office hours session.

This a required CPFP event for Cancer Prevention Fellows in their second year on-site with the CPFP. Participants will leave this module with a draft of the following sections of a grant proposal: (1) Specific Aims page, (2) Research Strategy (composed of Significance, Innovation, and Approach), and (3) references. In preparation for and during a mock study section, participants will also serve as primary, secondary, and tertiary reviewers for participant mini-grant proposals.
