Selection, Interviews, and Appointments

The CPFP Scientific Education Committee reviews complete applications submitted on time. This committee is comprised of scientists from different divisions of NCI, and FDA, and a non-NCI expert in cancer prevention and control. Applicants whom the committee deems are highly qualified will be notified and invited for an interview. Interviews are held virtually in October. Applicants admitted into the program will be notified of their status shortly thereafter.

Start of Appointment

For individuals entering the CPFP directly (e.g., not pursuing an M.P.H.), the appointment usually starts in mid-June. For individuals obtaining an M.P.H. or equivalent degree during the first year, the appointment begins with the start of the master’s program. All fellows entering the program are expected to attend the CPFP orientation held in June in Rockville, Maryland.

Duration of Appointment

The initial appointment is for 1 year and may be renewed on a yearly basis for up to 4 years of support. All renewals are contingent upon performance and total duration of fellowship stay at the NIH, which cannot exceed 5 years for a non-tenured appointment nor exceed 8 years for any type of doctoral-level position.
